THEME FOR2020

HISTORY

In December 1992 was first formally proposed agenda21 of UN conference on Environment and Development in Rio De Janeiro was adopted resolution by 22,march of every year was declared world water day.
In 1993, the first world water day was observed.

OBJECTIVE

World Water Day(WWD) is an international observance day, its intention is to inspire people around the world to learn more about water-related issues. WWD highlights the importance of freshwater. This day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

THEME FOR THE YEAR 2020

UN-Water is the convener for world water day and selects the theme for each year in consultation with UN organisations that share an interest in that year’s focus. The theme for 2020 is “WATER AND CLIMATE CHANGE’. In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an additional focus on handwashing and hygiene


ISSUES OF WATER

Relevant issues include water scarcity, water pollution, inadequate water supply, lack of sanitation and the impacts of climate change.


EFFORTS

Many NGOs are active in the WASH sector, such as UNICEF, WaterAid and Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor(WSUP) use the day to raise public awareness, get media attention for water issues and inspire action, release publications and films, as well as organizing round tables and seminars.
End Water Poverty, a global civil society coalition with 250 partner organizations, sponsors  Water action month each year.
The UN World Water Day Development Report(WWDR) is released each year on this day.


UN GUIDELINES

In July 2010 the United Nations General Assembly of the human right to water and sanitation. The Assembly recognized the right of every human being to have access to enough water for personal and domestic uses, meaning between 50 and 100 litres of water per person per day.
 The water must be safe, acceptable and affordable. The water costs should not exceed 3 per cent of household income.
Moreover, the water source has to be within 1,000 metres of the home and collection time should not exceed 30 minutes.
A 2012 WHO study shows that every US $1 invested in improved sanitation translates into an average global economic return of US $5.5.


FACTS TO BE WORRIED

Climate trend has issued a report in which an experiment reveals that almost 3 billion peoples in the world have not sufficient water to wash out their hands frequently.

This is a serious concern to take meanwhile the virus of COVID-19 spreading so rapidly in the world. W.H.O. also appeals to peoples to wash out their hands frequently for 20 seconds every time.

According to Climate trend report, 17 countries in the world are facing the high shortage of water, in which INDIA ranks at 13th position.

80% population in the world are already going through the problem of high shortage of water.

78.5cr peoples in the world are beyond the reach of getting basic water services.

0.2cr peoples in the world drinks contaminated water.
