National MILK DAY!!

 


HISTORY

World milk day was first designated by the FAO(Food and Agriculture Organisation) of the United Nations(U.N.) in June 1,2001. FAO has chosen this date because many countries were already celebrating a milk day during that time of year.

 

WHY WE CELEBRATE?

World milk day is an international day is celebrated to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. This day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector or dairy related products. The day provides an opportunity to focus attention on milk and raise awareness of dairy’s part in healthy diets, responsible food production and supporting livelihoods and communities. The fact that many countries chooses to do this on the same day lends additional importance to individual national celebrations and shows that milk is a global food.

 

INDIA

India ranks 1st in milk production, accounting for 22% of world production. Milk production in India has been increasing steadily  over the years from 55.6 million tonnes(1991-92) to 176.3 million tonnes(2017-18). India producing milk as at an average annual growth rate of 4.5%.

India’s dairy market is considered to be worth Rs. 9,168 billion – is catered to by a complex network of famers, dairy cooperatives, private players, cooperative federations and more.

National Milk Day in India is celebrated on November,26 every year.


This date was fixed in 2014 when the National Dairy Development Board(NDDB), The Indian Dairy Association(IDA) along with 22 states level milk federation agreed on this date to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Veghese Kurien. He was considered as the father of India’s White revolution. Dr. Kurien was also the founder of AMUL brand.

India’s most milk producing states are Uttar Pradesh ranks 1st with 18% contribution to the total milk produced by India. Rajasthan  with 11%, Andhra Pradesh with 10%, Gujrat with 8% and Punjab with 7% contribution to the total milk produced by India.

India’s top dairy products companies are:-

1.       Amul(Gujrat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.)

2.       Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Ltd.

3.       Mother dairy(subsidiary of NDDB)

4.       The Punjab state Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Ltd.

5.       Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Dairy Federation Ltd.

6.       Britannia Industries Ltd.

 

IN WORLD

FAO(Food and Agriculture Organisation) data shows that more than 1billion peoples, livelihood is supported by the dairy sector and that dairy products is consumed by more than 6 billion peoples globally.

Global cow milk production volume per year 522.7 million metric tons. Global export value of dairy products worth $ 52.09 billion.

Top importer of dairy products is Germany.

Volume of cow milk produced worldwide has risen steadily over the several years. In 2015, 497million metric tons of cow milk was produced worldwide; by 2019 the figure had risen to around 522million metric tons.

Liquid milk made up the largest share of the dairy market in terms of market value.

CONTROVERSY

In response to this event , a “World Pant Milk Day” was created in 2017, which occurs annually on August22. Their objections to world milk day centre around the environmental impact, health effects, and animal abuse of the dairy industry.
